   Allspice is sold as whole berries or ground. It comes from the seed of a tree indigenous to the Western Hemisphere, which makes it unusual in the world of spices, most of which originated in Asia. It earned the name "allspice" because its flavor resembles a combination of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Allspice is used in fruit desserts, chutneys, and pickles ( it often is an ingredient in pickling spices), as well as for gravies, sauces, stews, and soups.
